Rumor: Tomb Raider Definitive Edition 60 FPS on PS4, 30 FPS on Xbox One? (Update!)

January 23, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

If true, it’s going to be obvious console war fodder, but we wonder if it’s even worth buying this version.

UPDATE: In a Twitch.tv steam found here, Executive Producer Scot Amos confirmed that the Playstation 4 version of Tomb Raider Definitive Edition will be 60 FPS. Here's his full statement below:

Looking here, this is the PS4 version running at 60fps, again at 1080p. That's awesome for that to be able to showcase because when you get your hands on it you can feel it.

You can read our initial post, asserting the game was at 30 FPS for both consoles, here. Original Post follows below:

A site has come forward with the rumor that Playstation 4 is getting a 60 FPS Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, while the Xbox One version will only be 30 FPS.

Their source claims to have seen performance for both versions of the game, and has seen enough to provide performance details. Both versions will definitely be at 1080p, so that is clinched for sure. When it comes to framerate, it is not locked, so both consoles are inconsistent on this.

The source does note that Playstation 4 consistently goes to as high as 60 FPS, and only dips in the worst case scenarios. On the other hand, the Xbox One version usually sticks around 30 FPS, and will occasionally go to as high as 45 FPS at best. In terms of other effects, both versions will definitely duplicate those found in higher end PCs, such as TressFX, subsurface light scattering, etc.

Before we talk comparisons, it should be pointed out that this actually looks bad for both platforms, since it means both of them can easily be bested by PC gamers right now. Having said that, we have been here before. We know the basest conclusion is that the Xbox One is less capable, but that may not be the case. We have read speculation that developers are favoring the PS4 over the Xbox One. Either way, if you are an 8th gen console owner, this should make you give pause before buying the Definitive Edition.

Tomb Raider Definitive Edition is coming January 28.
